Majority of Finland's top three parties
back nuclear power

Clear majorities of Finland's top three parties are in favour of building new nuclear power generating capacity, commercial broadcaster MTV3 quoted its poll as indicating on Sunday.

About 91 per cent of Conservative party respondents said they backed the construction of at least one new nuclear power station, with some 60 per cent of Social Democrat ones and 72 per cent of Centre party respondents voicing their approval of new nuclear capacity.

About four per cent of Conservative respondents said no further nuclear power stations should be built, contrasting with 21 per cent in the Centre party and 26 per cent in the Social Democratic party.

MTV3 sent a questionnaire on nuclear energy to some 700 Conservative, Social Democrat and Centre party district committee members. The response rate in the Conservative and Social Democratic parties was three out of four and in the Centre party, 64 per cent.
